What was to be expected happened. The two top Mercedes-AMG S-Class models will have Plug-In Hybrid technology: Mercedes-AMG S 63 and S 73.

Delivery of the first normal S-Class models has not even started yet and Mercedes is already working on top AMG versions.

So far the most powerful S-Class model is the Mercedes S 500 4Matic equipped with the new 6-cylinder in-line 3-liter engine and mild hybrid technology. The heat engine delivers 435 HP and 520 Nm while the  integrated starter generator supports it at start-up and acceleration with another 22 HP and 250 Nm.

Mercedes has already announced the Plug-In Hybrid version Mercedes S 580 e which will have 510 HP and an electric range of 100 km WLTP due to the new 28 kWh battery, a capacity more than double that of the old S 560 e.

In these conditions, in order to offer top performance, it was necessary for Mercedes to electrify the top AMG versions as well.

According to the German magazine motor und sport, the future Mercedes-AMG S 63 and S 73 will combine the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine with an electric motor. Mercedes-AMG S 63 will develop about 700 HP and Mercedes-AMG S 73 will exceed 800 HP due to a more powerful electric motor.

We expect the electric range to be slightly shorter than the S 580 e because the battery will have the same capacity and the power of the electric motors is higher. The same top propulsion system with 4.0 liter bi-turbo V8 and an electric motor with over 800 HP in total will be offered for the future AMG GT 4-doors.

We have one more question mark. Being electrified, it is very possible that future models will be called Mercedes-AMG S 63 e and S 73 e. However, conventional versions will no longer exist so Mercedes could keep their names of Mercedes-AMG S 63 and S 73 even if they are PHEV versions. We will see.

Undoubtedly, the electric motor supplies more power and the combination between electric motor and thermal engine will be more powerful than any conventional versions have ever existed. On the other hand, Mercedes needs electrification to reduce emissions that are quite high on the bi-turbo 4.0 liter V8 engine.
But the huge 28 kWh battery placed in the trunk will affect the roadholding of AMG versions and there will be customers who will not be happy about it.

The spy photos presented by auto motor und sport magazine show the huge rims and the oversized braking system as well as the AMG specific front and rear spoilers. In addition, the 4-pipe exhaust system is proof that there is a very powerful heat engine under the hood.
The new Mercedes-AMG S 63 and 73 models will debut towards the end of 2021.
