Another EV option has entered the fray, this time from the Ford, with the release of the Ford Escape Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV). This signifies the start of the brand’s electric vehicle roll with five to be part of its line-up by the end of 2024.
Powered by a 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol motor, coupled with a 14.4kWh lithium-ion battery, the Escape PHEV produces 167kW of power, while maintaining an economy figure of just 1.5-litres/100km.
Ford claims you can have an electric driving range of more than 50km too – useful for sneaking away from home. Charging takes place either via a charging port found on the passenger side of the Escape, or on the move using regenerative braking.
There are four driving modes which control the deployment of the battery, depending on how much battery assistance the driver wants. The Escape PHEV is covered by a 5-year, unlimited kilometre warranty.
The electric motor and battery are covered by an 8-year 160,000km warranty – allowing owners to feel at ease with their plunge into the new world. Far from Ford’s original “you can have it in any colour as long as it’s black”, the Escape PHEV comes in eight colours.
These include Frozen White, Blazer Blue, Agate Black, Blue Metallic, Magnetic, Solar Silver, White Platinum and Rapid Red. Pricing starts at $53,440 (increasing to $54,440 in July), with optional ST-Line and Park packs available.
