BangShift.com 1980s Supermodified Mayhem From Oswego Speedway

There are few places if any that are more synonymous with Supermodified racing across the country than Oswego Speedway in New York. Opened in 1951 as a 5/8th mile dirt track it was that surface and length for decades before making the switch to asphalt. Every Labor Day weekend the baddest of the bad in the world of Supermodified racing still gather for the 200 lap Budweiser classic. It’s a throw down and one of those “gearhead bucket list” events that you should aspire to attend one day. We sure do.

This video is cool because it combines old 1980s footage (featuring what we think may be the coolest era of Supermodified racing) with high tension driver reactions, wreckage, and good old wheel to wheel competition at Oswego. Open wheel race cars present their own awesome challenges for competition and you’ll see them all here. When guys touch tires it does not end well. When guys barf motors all over the track it does not end well. When a guy is sitting cockeyed in the corner and the entire field comes screaming at him…you get the picture.

It takes big guts to drive a Supermod in the year 2018. Back in the 1980s we’d argue that with cars and safety not as good as today the guts were even bigger. A 900hp big block hanging off the side of the car, huge tires, and what basically amounts to Satan’s go-karts running at full bore. Yep, that is Supermodified racing and here’s a wild look at it past.
