AMG & Mercedes-Benz Drop Hot Info on Upcoming Electrified Models

Mercedes-Benz recently made several announcements regarding its electrification strategy and divulged how AMG will use electrification to develop the company’s forthcoming performance models.

During Daimler’s Annual Company meeting last week, the parent company of Mercedes-Benz made several announcements regarding its electrification strategy. The company used the occasion to reveal details about its upcoming EQS battery-powered sedan. The Tri-Star brand’s performance division also has plans to capitalize on the popularity of electric drive technology.

Recently, AMG also announced that it is currently in the process of developing an all-electric model, which is scheduled to make its global debut sometime later this year. Mercedes-Benz has also confirmed that EQS will be its first offering under the company’s new electric sub-brand. Mercedes-Benz intends on introducing four battery-only offerings in the North American market by 2022.

The Mercedes-Benz EQS sedan will make its European debut in August 2021, and the luxury car manufacturer has confirmed that it will offer 478 miles of all-electric driving range. The company based its range estimate on Europe’s WLTP standards, which happen to be more lenient than EPA benchmarks.

The upcoming Mercedes EQS sedan will also feature the company’s MBUX Hyperscreen dashboard display. The Hyperscreen is a 56-inch AI-powered touchscreen that runs across the width of the dash. The Tri-Star brand has also confirmed that it will officially reveal the forthcoming EQS sedan on April 15th. The car will be based on the carmaker’s Electric Vehicle Architecture (EVA Platform) which will also underpin EQS’s SUV sibling.

AMG is also developing variants of the C-Class sedan and AMG GT 4-Door, which will be powered by the division’s all-new E Performance plug-in hybrid technology. AMG is will soon introduce what it likes to call a modular powertrain for its upcoming models. The powertrain will consist of turbocharged 4/8-liter combustion engines, which will be mated to a 9-Speed automatic transmission.

The companies performance powertrain will use the gasoline motor to propel the front wheels, and the rear axle will be driven by what Merc calls the Electric Drive Unit (EDU). The powertrain will also get an electrically controlled differential, a lithium-ion battery pack, a cooling system, and a dedicated two-speed transmission for the electric motor.

Mercedes claims that its 4-liter V8 performance hybrid powertrain will produce around 804 HP of power, and its 2-liter four-cylinder sibling will churn out around 644 HP. It’s safe to say that Mercedes’ electrification strategy is shaping up and delivering promising results.
