Back in the day, the most capable one ton tow rig on the planet was a single cab dually. They weighed the least, so they could carry the most, and they had all the power and might to pull any gooseneck, fifth wheel, or tag trailer around. In 2021 you can hardly buy a single cab truck and that will only get worse. The favorite of street truck guys forever, the “short wide” single cab short bed truck is only available from Ford and Dodge anymore, with GM deciding they weren’t selling enough of them to warrant another chassis. We doubt that single cab trucks will be available at all for more than a couple more years, at least not in a configuration that includes a bed. Cab and chassis version, maybe, but single cab pickups will be on their way out.
One thing folks seem to forget when talking about payload and carrying capacity on trucks like this dually here, is that the suspension and drivetrain components are rated to carry or tow a certain amount of weight. If you add more weight to the tow vehicle itself, the amount they can carry or two will go down. So a crew cab dually has a lower carrying capacity than a single cab dually, for example. In 2021 it is nearly 700 lbs less carrying capacity for the crew cab vs a single cab dually.
That means, this one here is about as highly rated for towing as you could get in 1986. The 4×4 option does take away a couple hundred pounds of capacity, but not enough that we’d care. This thing can pull a house and we love it. Did we mention it has a stick in it? Oh yeah baby, Granny Low for the win.
