IF you’re looking for an SUV that can conquer the city’s concrete jungle, then the 2021 Kia Seltos Sport Plus is begging to take it on. An urban warrior, it features sharp lines in all the right places, delivering a strong and dynamic exterior design.
The Seltos sports an in-line four cylinder 2.0-litre engine that produces 110kW and 180Nm. The engine is paired to a CVT transmission, and we have to admit this has been the most impressive CVT package we have tested, to date.
The Seltos delivers buttery smooth power delivery, with very minimal lag on take off in any of the drive modes. It’s particularly so in Sports mode, where you really can feel the responsiveness.
We can also attest to the accuracy, of Kia’s claimed fuel consumption of 6.8-litres/100km combined. The numbers were bang on, despite some spirited driving. The steering agility and nimbleness from the small SUV is fantastic too.
Kia has tuned it perfectly to provide the right level of feedback in the areas that count, with the 2021 version of the Seltos rolling on 17-inch five split spoke alloys and Kumho tyres, which provide a great amount of grip under acceleration.
The Seltos remained stable and confident even through the twisty stuff. In the city landscape and weaving through traffic, it was remarkable how it just comes into it’s own, demonstrating its ability to tackle anything and guide you through.
The Seltos can even be fitted with a tow bar, adding to its practicality. Rated at 600Kg un-braked or 1,100kg braked, it’s not going to tow a caravan, but it provides enough capability to get some hardware home from Bunnings or furniture from IKEA.
Inside, it is comfortable, very comfortable. The front seats provide good lower lumber support and hug you in all the right places. It is certainly a place that you can sit for a long period, and not get the old numb bum.
You’ll find a black one-tone cloth trim, accompanied by artificial leather accents in the Seltos Sport Plus, but there are a lot of hard plastics too in the cockpit. So too, it’s a little harsh on the door trims and the rest of the dashboard and pillars.
At this price point and level of practicality, it is still decent. The steering wheel is a good size too, but feels a little hard and would benefit from a softer wrapped leather or faux leather material.
It is however jammed with technology, featuring a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, positioned well within the dash. We did enjoy the split screen functionality it offers, allowing to you customise the information you want to see.
You can choose to view everything from music, navigation, maps, or your Apple CarPlay and Android Auto settings. We will say we struggled to get the latter to behave properly when connecting.
There are lots of storage pockets throughout the cabin, and great boot capacity at 433-litres with the rear seats up, or 1,393-litres with them folded down. That’s plenty of space for grocery shopping, or throwing your set of golf clubs in the back.
There are a few improvements that Kia could make with the interior space, as it feels a bit of a let down. That said, this shouldn’t detract from the fact its super functional and delivers on its urban warrior promise.
It’s overall size is decent too, at 4,370mm long, 1,800mm wide and 1,620mm high. The combination means it’s the perfect size to fit into your average shopping centre carparks.
Kia has also ensured that you and your family are safe, with features like ABS, parking assist sensors and display, rear-view camera, rear cross traffic avoidance assist, lane keep assist, autonomous emergency braking and a forward collision system.
The 2021 Kia Seltos Sports Plus stands out among its competitors in the segment, and offers an impressive package, not the least of which includes a 7-year unlimited kilometre warranty and 7-years capped price servicing.
It hits the road at $34,290 drive away, and is available in Clear White with Cherry Black roof, Starbright Yellow with Cherry Black roof, Neptune Blue, Mars Orange, Steel Grey, Gravity Grey, Cherry Black and Snow White Pearl.
