AMG’s M139 engine is a technical wonder. Want over 500 horsepower from your AMG 45? It’s easy!
There’s something mighty under the hood of every “45” powered AMG out there. As we know, this hot hatch engine powers the A45, CLA45 and GLA45 to a tune that the world has never seen before. In fact, it has the highest specific output of any four cylinder engine, churning out 208 horsepower per liter. The M139 might not get the same kind of recognition that other AMG engines get, but it surely deserves the same praise.
But we know the AMG mindset. “A lot” is sometimes “not enough.” That’s where Posaidon comes in to play. Their software upgrade for the A45 engines is a simple re-programming measure. According to Carscoops, this increases output by 43 horsepower and 44 lb/ft of torque. Not bad for a simple bit of electronic trickery. But if you’re not happy with 458 horsepower from your A45 S, then you can always go one step farther.
Posaidon has what’s called an RS 525 package to help for your high octane needs. In Germany, they measure by PS, which this one has 525 of. That 525PS number essentially translates to 518 horsepower. Pretty stout for a smaller turbo motor. Torque is rated at 443 lb/ft and ready to launch this AWD monster to some quick quarter mile times.
But remember this M139 does apply the AMG’s one person, one engine hand built philosophy. We’re actually sad that we can’t see this engine in a small svelte sports car, something like the SLC. As it stands, the SLC is available with the “43” AMG motor. But that 3.0 V6 has divided the community on whether it is a true AMG motor or not.
But think of it this way. With 518 horsepower coming from a 2.0 liter 4 cylinder, the 4.0 liter 8 cylinder engine should be capable of a theoretical 1,036 horsepower. But we haven’t seen one tuned to that level yet. We know this isn’t the extent that these engines can be pushed either. RENNtech has their tuning cranked up to 592 horsepower. So as it stands, the pint sized AMG engine could go down in history as one of their best.
