The 2020 Toyota Hilux and Fortuner have been awarded a 5-star crash test rating by the ASEAN NCAP. The model tested by the authorities was a Thailand-spec Toyota Hilux pickup, whose scores also apply to the facelifted Fortuner SUV.

Toyota Fortuner facelift crash test results

The Toyota Fortuner facelift’s crash test results were an extension of the Hilux’s results. The Fortuner was not crash tested and its ratings are based on the Hilux’s crash test assessment. According to ASEAN NCAP, the Fortuner has comparable occupant protection to the tested pickup, based on the technical evidence provided by Toyota.

The facelifted Toyota Fortuner received an overall score of 87.46 points, giving it a 5-star safety rating. The Fortuner scored 34.03 points out of 36 for Adult Occupant Protection (AOP), 43.38 points out of 49 for Child Occupant Protection (COP) and 13.00 points out of 18.0 in the Safety Assist Technologies (SATs) category. Its Frontal Impact (14.53) and Side Impact (16.0) results are identical to the Hilux’s, but the SUV gets a higher 3.50 head protection rating to the Hilux’s 2.40.

The weighted score for AOP was 47.27, while the COP was 22.13 and SATs was 18.06, adding up to give it the final 87.46 points for its rating.

Toyota Hilux crash test results

The Toyota Hilux used in these crash tests was a Thailand-spec 2.8-litre diesel variant, equipped with three airbags.

In this configuration, the pickup truck scored an overall 83.42 points for its 5-star rating. Specifically, it obtained 32.93 out of a maximum 36 points for AOP, 44.04 out of 49.00 for COP, and 10.95 out of a possible 18 in the Safety Assist Technologies (SATs) category. The weighted score of the Hilux for AOP was 45.74, while the COP was 22.47 and SATs was 15.21, adding up to give it the final 83.42 points for its rating.

Fortuner facelift and Hilux India launch plans

The Toyota Fortuner facelift is expected to be launched in India sometime in 2021. When the facelifted Fortuner arrives in India, expect its prices to be a fair bit higher than that of the current model (which range from Rs 28.66-34.43 lakh, ex-showroom, Delhi).

The Toyota Hilux pickup, meanwhile, is currently being evaluated for an India launch. A rival to the Isuzu D-Max V-cross, the Toyota Hilux is expected to be priced aggressively, starting at Rs 15 lakh for the entry version of the double cab, with more luxurious and better-appointed versions likely to be available for around Rs 20 lakh (ex-showroom).
